The Gauhati High Court is the high court of Assam state that was set up on 1 March 1948 after passing the Government of India Act 1935, the Governor General of India. The high court was initiated on 5 April 1948 by Harilal Kania then the Chief Justice of India.

At the development time the high court was known as the High Court of Assam and Nagaland but when Nagaland state was created on 1 December 1963, the court name was renamed as Gauhati High Court in 1971 by the North East Areas (Reorganisation) Act, 1971. It covers four state Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, and Mizoram under its control and power.
